  8. Construction of the Ithembu Lethu 4IR Lab at Tsiki Naledi Primary School in Hendrina, Mpumalanga

In partnership with Software AG and the Department of Basic Education, we transformed the existing but outdated computer lab and library into a multi-purpose learning centre. It is now equipped with 3D printers, drones, coding system learning kits, digital teaching boards and state-of-the-art computers that offer specialised high-end technology to Grade 4 to 7 learners. This helps to address the digital learning gap in rural areas. It has spurred the South African government to mandate the introduction of coding and robotics to South African schools starting in 2023, allowing learners as young as 10 to learn how to build and code machines (usually, their first experience of a computer would only be at university). The success of this project led to the first waiting list recorded for incoming students at Tsiki Naledi Primary School. Currently 100 prospective learners await admission into the school. We are currently working with e-Mfundi, a learning and skills development provider, to create the first-ever technology-based curriculum that is unique to the rural community.

  1. E&T believes in the South African youth and will do what is necessary to support small business owners
    • DIPSTREET, the street fashion trendsetters, was one such project. E&T’s assistance enabled the store to move into a more lucrative location and upgrade its retail space. Shortly after that, they were able to open a second store in the trendy Parkhurst 4th Avenue.
    • MCHL, commonly known as MCHL by Taku. In its first 18 months in operation, the small start-up went from R0 to R1 million in sales and was featured in Forbes magazine. The fashion label offers tailor-made garments for various clients, including celebrities Maps Maponyane and Zee Nxumalo.
    • SCOUT STUDIOS, another young media company, was a group of young creatives who were experiencing a downturn in business. E&T decided to step in and assist. We extended a loan which saved the company from shutting down. Those creative individuals have now grown into one of the most dynamic, vibrant and trailblazing creatives in the media industry.
    • BLANK SPACES: In late 2018, Blank Spaces Records was born. In just over two years, the small recording label has captured over one million streams, mostly in 2020. They have Grammy-award nominated artist, eVoke, Malawi-bred and locally-loved music mogul King Jillz, gifted Zimbabwean musician Fakeano and soon-to-be-star Mpumalanga-bred Stephen of Kent on their lineup. They have also worked on award winning projects with the likes of Beyonce, Cassper Nyovest, Lady Zamar and Drake.
    • DOLLAS, a clothing label birthed out of the streets of Mayibuye Township in Midrand. This epitomous label was launched in 2018 by Louis Nkuna with garments that reflect the South African ‘kasi’ culture. It has been worn by famous musicians such as rapper Tshego and Amapiano duo Mellow & Sleazy. The clothing label is also engaged in community educational development by promoting automotive engineering through the form of mechanical workshops and “spinning” events.
    • TD by Taku Dlamini is a lauded female-owned fashion label that we have supported for several years. Takudzwa Dlamini is a feminist fashion designer who examines the relationship between femininity and masculinity, nostalgia and revisiting her Shona roots in a contemporary way. The fashion label focuses on local and sustainable production practices that enhance communities and preserve the regenerative capacity of the environment. In 2021, the business was selected to participate in AFI Fashion Week. We stepped in to provide financial assistance and legal support to help her to join the global fashion stage.
